i have little doubt that julius watkins, willie ruff, tom varner, or john clark, among others, could have tore one up, had they chosen to.

That's tough -- all the harmonic series of an open horn with none of the raising or lowering of tones with the valves. Lip can only take it so far, and at the speed of jazz......

considering all that, and i did, the skills of many jazz musicians border on the super human.

I played this in high school. I tied to play jazz on it and my music teacher said to me in his heavy Italian accident. "Stop, you don't playa jazz on that instrument."
