medjuck
I've never come across any one of the 3 records (Clarence) Gene Shaw did for Argo. He was called Clarence Shaw on some great recordings with Mingus in 1957 then after a 5 year lay-off did 3 records as leader under the name Gene Shaw . After that I don't know what happened. Sure like to see them released on cd but would be happy to buy/trade for them on Lp. Ditto for any Billy Butterfield Lp with Gil Evan's arrangement of Singin' the Blues. kh1958
Carnival Sketches has been released on a Japanese import CD, which I was able to obtain through amazon.com.
Chuck Nessa
At one time I had all the lps. From memory, Carnival Sketches is the least desirable. Look for the vinyl and buy them in order; Breakthrough, Debut in Blues, Carnival Sketches. I heard him a few times in Chicago. He played with an organ trio. jazzkrow
I have all 3 of them. "Debut in Blues" can be found around fairly easily on LP- Chess Records release from 1984. IMHO, they are all great releases!
AmirBagachelles
Debut in Blues and Breakthrough can had on 80s/90s reissue Japanese vinyl. The Argo vinyl I have dug up has been pretty beat.
The Mule
Does anyone know if Sherman Morrison, the tenor player, was ever recorded again after BREAKTHROUGH? He had a bit of a Coltrane-thing going on...

That's what I suspected. Too bad as he seemed like an interesting player...
Son-of-a-Weizen
Funny, I just burned 'Autumn Walk' from Breakthrough for a comp disc that I've put together to entertain (hopefully?) the assembled at a 60th B'Day party for a pal next weekend. I really like that bass of Robinson's. I agree that that's the LP to snag first medjuck.
kh1958
Does the Lord discography show any other Gene Shaw recorded appearances, other than Tiajuana Moods, East Coasting, A Modern Jazz Symposium..., all with Mingus, the unreleased session with Shaft Hadi and Pepper Adams included in the Mingus Debut box, and the three Argo session? medjuck
I don't know about Lor but I've got a discography by Bob Weir that only lists the Mingus recordings and the 3 Argos. (In fact it doesn't mention the unrelased Dial.)
