Brownian Motion Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 One of the more elusive figures in pre-WW II jazz. http://atavist.net/weatherford/ Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Isn't there a Chronological Classics volume on him? Have often heard of his influence on the great Earl Hines, so have wondered about his life. Didn't Buck Clayton play with him in China? Thought I asked Willie Ruff about that. I remember him exclaiming, "With a sign on the door that said, 'No N.....s or Dogs allowed.'" Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Thanks for the tip - just bought and downloaded. I love Weatherford and have been trying to track down his Indian recordings - there were a few on a Jazum LP in the public library of the little town where I grew up. Quote

AllenLowe Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 that guy is a very good writer, we spoke briefly when he was working on the project. Weatherford was an early influence on Hines, and there are some early, poorly recorded but interesting solos (I think I've got on on Devilin Tune). The '30s solos are interesting but a little out of date. Quote

brownie Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 A shame indeed that the Chronological Classics series dit not publish any Weatherford while the label was alive. A very hard to get CD with several Weatherford tracks from the Paris Swing sessions (plus two tracks from Calcutta) is the Jazz Piano 1925-1944 release from the excellent EMI Jazz Time series that appeared in the early '90s. But that CD came and went shortly after its release! Quote
paul secor Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 (edited) There are 7 Weatherford cuts - nothing from Calcutta, unfortunately - (along with 2 tracks by Garnet Clark and 6 by Garland Wilson) on a Pathe Marconi LP, "Piano & Swing" (Tome 1). Haven't listened to it in a long time. Edited September 13, 2011 by paul secor Quote
Brownian Motion Posted September 13, 2011 Author Report Posted September 13, 2011 Many of Weatherford's India tracks, including four piano cuts with rhythm, are available on a Harlequin lp from the 1980s "Jazz and Hot Dance in India". Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 that I'd like to hear - looks like it's an LP, and not available anywhere. Quote
Brownian Motion Posted September 13, 2011 Author Report Posted September 13, 2011 that I'd like to hear - looks like it's an LP, and not available anywhere. I have a copy. I'm considering having it dubbed to a CD. If I do, I'll send you a copy. I'll send one to Jeffcrom too. Quote

Not bad - not a lot of detail, but I certainly know a lot more about Mr. Weatherford than I did. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 thanks, would love to hear that stuff. Quote
