Durium Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Sam Most is one of those jazz legends of the 1950s that seems to be forgotten now. During the 1950s he was the first one who played bebop on his flute. He used the technique of humming and singing, while playing the melody line on his flute, which gives a very special effect, that fits well into his music. Sam Most is scheduled with the Rein De Graaff Trio in a Dutch tour labelled as Master of the Flute. The trio of Rein will be enlarged with Ellister Van Der Molen on trumpet and in Groningen with Ben van Gelder on alto saxophone. BeBop Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Sam? You out there? You promised to play at my wedding. (Though I didn't promise to get married.) But seriously, Most is a fine flute player, but seek out some of his tenor work for a real treat. I believe there's some on the album with Mort Weiss, on But Beautiful, an album with Tal Farlow, the "Bird, Monk, Miles" album. Sorry to be short on details; I'm traveling and don't have access to my recordings, particularly those I only have on LP. And, he's a nice guy. Quote
flat5 Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 (edited) Is that a straight alto flute? or is Sam rather short? or is this just a result of camera/optical stuff. or is it just me? I loved his "Notes To You" recording on clarinet when I was a kid. Edit: I guess it's just me. Edited October 7, 2011 by flat5 Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Bad hair. Thank the gods I never tried that look. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 this cat is cool, he actually did play my uncles wedding ten years ago, mostly on alto sax. on alto he kind of sounds like paul desmond. i told him how i have his records on bethlehem and xanadu Quote
flat5 Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Chuck, the 1970s was a bad hair decade :-) Most of us were guilty. Quote

He (and his brother Abe) were both also excellent clarinetists. Not sure if Sam plays clarinet anymore. You should also seek out his session on Debut (reissued on LP on Xanadu). There's also an EP I have by him on Prestige. Not sure if that has been reissued anywhere. Anyone know offhand? Quote
