Sundog
I heard a version of My Funny Valentine? by the Thad Jones /Mel Lewis Big Band today on the radio. I believe Bob Brookmeyer might have also been playing on this cut. Anyone have a clue what album this is on? A few quick searches at All Music yielded no dividends. The version in question contained a dark, almost classical outro to the song.

Ahhh! "Mel Lewis" that's the one. Thank you. Sounds like a very interesting album.
JSngry
Excerpts of this arrangement, w/Brookmeyer rehearsing the band, show up in some TV show that was part of an ongoing series that aired on A&E about 15 or so years ago. Sorry, don't remember anything more than that. Great chart, though. "Dark" indeed, and rich too.
Sundog
Yeah, it does appear that this album is out of print. Can't find it anywhere. Of course there's always the used vinyl option. That TV show sounds interesting given the rehearsal footage that you've recalled. Do you remember anything else about the series? Was it performance oriented?
JSngry
I really have no recollections other than it came on A&E. Sorry.

JSngry
Upon further recollection, I remember A&E showing some "from the Vanguard" shows that were also released on VHS. Don't know if this would have been one of them, but it seems like a logical place to begin, maybe. Hope that helps.
Sundog
A few quick searches turned up a Mel Lewis Big Band 1983 concert video (VHS). This contains footage from a show in Jerusalem with a lot of the same personnel that Joe M. mentioned above. I guessing this is a worthwhile purchase. Only wish it was on DVD. Also, another video Live At The Smithsonian appears to be available.
JSngry
Maybe it's the Smitsonian tape. A&E showed those shows too. Sorry to be so useless, but at least you know there's something to look for now. Then again, that can be a bigger nuisance than not knowing...
