Charles Delaunay (1911-1988) Durium Very interesting, Durium! I never realised that he was the son of Robert and Sonia Delaunay, major figures in 20th century art, and favorites of mine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Delaunay http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonia_Delaunay He was, of course, honored by John Lewis with "Delaunay's Dilemma". brownie Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 Best book on Charles Delaunay (for french readers) is that came out in 2009. Was privileged to get acquainted with Delaunay when I started writing articles for 'Jazz Hot' in the mid-fifties. The teenager I was then needed encouragements and I got them from him when he was in charge of the publication. Quote

cih Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonia_Delaunay it looks like the young Charles was exerting a major influence on the look of the '20s from a very young age: "About 1911 I had the idea of making for my son, who had just been born, a blanket composed of bits of fabric like those I had seen in the houses of Russian peasants. When it was finished, the arrangement of the pieces of material seemed to me to evoke cubist conceptions and we then tried to apply the same process to other objects and paintings." Sonia Delaunay I love Sonia Delaunay, particularly her patterns for fabrics - the preparatory paintings make great graphic abstracts. Quote

Charles Delaunay (1911-1988) Durium Did Phil Schaap's dad work on a translation of one of Delaunay's works, or some other project? In one of Schaap's blathering sessions officialy called Bird Flight I remember coming out of my Schaap talk-induced stupor when he mentioned that dad had something to do w/promoting a Charlie Parker event in France and also acting as translator. Anyone know Quote
brownie Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Walter Schaap and Charles Delaunay were very good friends ever since Schaap was in Paris to study at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in the 30s until 1939 when Schaap returned to New York. They remained in touch. Schaap helped Delaunay as his NY representative to write contracts for musicians sought by Delaunay for the 1949 Paris Jazz Festival. Bird led a group (with Kenny Dorham) at the festival. Quote
