Van Basten II Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 (edited) Seems my chilhood and early teenage years are dissapearing with the passing of The Kid and recently Whitney Houston. Carter was not my favourite, Dawson and Raines were, but he still was the biggest name and the biggest star here, he was on the same level than Guy Lafleur here which is really saying something. I remember when we were playing baseball, we were always imitating him by pulling our slleeves the way he did when we were at the plate Don't know if Montreal will ever have a pro athlete (other than hockey player) that will be as big and popular as Carter was during these years. With his passing, they are very few emotional links remaining between our city and MLB . Thanks for the thrills Kid. My favourite moment from him was at the 1979 all star game By the way, if you wonder why he was such a hit with the fans Edited February 17, 2012 by Van Basten II Quote
Brad Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 As a Mets fan, we knew this was inevitable when it was announced that he had inoperable tumors but it hurts nonetheless and reminds us all of when we were younger and makes us today feel a bit more mortal. In 1986, the Mets made a video called Let's Go Mets!, probably because they saw how well the Bears did with theirs in 1985. Anyway it was a big hit. I still have it in VHS and listen to it once in a while. Don't know if it's ever come out on DVD. Someone played it last night on the air and it brought back memories. Quote
Dan Gould Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 Its been painful to watch these clips for me but in a somewhat different way. Only when Mookie Wilson (and Bill Buckner) go will I be forced to see even more videos of 1986, over and over again. So condolences to his fans. Much as his personality rubbed me the wrong way, he was one of the greats at his position, and there's something to be said for a man who enjoyed his job as much as Gary Carter did. Quote
Brad Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 Great article by Bob Klapisch who covered the Mets during the 80s and beyond. See Gary Carter Inspired Us On and Off the Field Quote
fasstrack Posted February 18, 2012 Report Posted February 18, 2012 Baseball's great catcher Gary Carter lost his battle with brain cancer. RIP Kid. Indeed. He was my age, besides, thus it hits even closer to home. Also, I believe, he was a year or so younger than George Harrison, who died of the same illness. Quote
