tkeith Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 Track 3 - How did I miss Don Byas?!?!?! My Dad will disown me! Track 15 - Well, sh!t. First, props to Michael Weiss for making me think it was Barry Harris. Second, props for making me looking like an even bigger @$$ for my comments about modern players. Quote
BillF Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 (edited) Wow! All got a bit complicated around #13 and #15. I identified 15 as Montoliu, but he's at 13, while 15 is Michael, who identified chunks of this BFT, but not himself! Very pleased to find what I called a "beautiful Bud Powell-influenced bop pianist" is Michael. He deserves a whole box of cigars IMHO. Edited February 27, 2012 by BillF Quote
Michael Weiss Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 #15: I recognized it was me a few bars in. I didn't ID it because I was curious to see guesses and comments. It's Cherokee all the way. I just happened to quote Laura on the bridge of the first chorus. The date was November 19, 1989 at Baird Auditorium in Washington, DC. A little background: I was hired to transcribe and provide the Monk Competition with lead sheets of Monk tunes, so I wasn't considering competing. At the time of the competition I was working a three week engagement with the Art Farmer/Clifford Jordan Quintet at Sweet Basil. But Barry Harris, who was one of the judges (the others being Ahmad Jamal, Horace Silver, Walter Bishop, Jr., and Hal Galper) talked me into it. I had to take two nights off from the Art Farmer gig. Admittedly I was a little cocky and didn't prepare as seriously as I should have. I didn't know what I was really in for until I was sitting at the piano with a couple of TV cameras breathing down my neck. In the end I placed second behind Bill Cunliffe, who performed, of all things, a very polished S'Wonderful. What any of this had to do with Thelonious Monk I'll never know. Far more rewarding though was winning the Monk Composition Competition in 2000 which Wayne Shorter presented me with. That was sweet. Quote
Spontooneous Posted February 28, 2012 Report Posted February 28, 2012 Phew. Glad I didn't say anything bad about Michael. But I did say bad things about Tete and Mabes, both of whom I adore. Quote
lipi Posted March 2, 2012 Report Posted March 2, 2012 Good stuff! Will have to hunt down the Buck Clayton. Sorry I didn't contribute this month. Work caught up with me, I'm afraid. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 2, 2012 Author Report Posted March 2, 2012 Good stuff! Will have to hunt down the Buck Clayton. Sorry I didn't contribute this month. Work caught up with me, I'm afraid. That's quite alright. The Clayton will be very hard to find since it was never issued. My copy came from the radio station. I had a friend that work at the station in Germany are rescued a number reels after the station switched formats. Quote
