Columbia 5-Disc Artist Sets

Recommended Posts

The local B&M store has a couple of these Colubmia "Original Album Classics" for great prices. All stuff I have on LP, but it's a cheap way to get the CD versions. They are sealed. Does anyone know if these sets contain the bonus tracks that appear on the individual titles, or do these simply have the LP content?

I think where there are Legacy editions around at the time the boxes appear, they were used - the first Elvis set, for instance, is a combination of both... but there's no need for it any longer now that several Legacy Edition 2CD sets have appeared... and that's the main point: make sure not to buy too many cheapo sets that you won't need in a few months because you got better editions!

Previous threads on these and the Rhino 5CD sets:

A couple of back covers (you can discern bonus tracks):

(on the Miles, the first disc has bonus tracks, too, but not marked with an asterisk, it seems)

The bonus tracks are usually included because the versions used are typically the most recent rather than new remasters. In some cases you might get a whole extra album where an old two-on-one release has been used; for example the three-disc Aretha Franklin contains an unlisted Soft and Beautiful and the five-disc Henry Mancini also has Arabesque. It's a great series if you are new to the music or are filling gaps.

King Ubu's point is pertinent: Popmarket's more expensive Complete Albums Collection series is making some of these OACs redundant (eg, the Brubecks), so follow your instincts carefully.
