I just finished readin a book about The Wrecking Crew. Several of them (including Hal Blaine) were jazz musicians before they began working in the studios. Barney Kessel was a member and a couple of the funniest moments in the book involve him making comments about Sonny Bono sessions.

It's poorly written but well researched and documented. The last half is basically a series of anecdotes which are a lot of fun.
