Noj Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 The only cat my family ever had that lived a long while (Rocky, RIP) was one mean mofo. We'd have never let a baby sit anywhere near him. Quote
Big Wheel Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 (edited) As this is like watching a bunch of JFK assassination conspiracy theorists who have never seen the Zapruder film, I feel compelled to post the original text: While I will not attempt a close reading here (this is likely to bring the post-structuralists out of their village, torches aflame) I will offer up the following observations: -The horseplay prior to the incident was good-natured enough. Perhaps the cat was declawed? -The people in the film are speaking a Germanic language and it appears the child is being ordered to strike the cat. -The laughing that transpires after the cat's retaliation is high-pitched enough to make one suspect the child is being watched and filmed by another young person. Let the games begin! Extra points awarded for the victor eating the spleen of the defeated. Edited May 6, 2012 by Big Wheel Quote
rostasi Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 It's in a cat's nature to play rough with each other and with humans until either lets it be known that it's had enough. Putting a cat with a baby - no matter how "cute" it may appear - baby laughing, crying, gurgling...all emotions changing in split seconds - before the inevitable strike is just plain stupid. Sounds like a Russian or Ukrainian voice, but I don't know if it actually told the child to hit the cat or not. My "kids" get rough with me and with each other, but we have an understanding. That's something that nobody in this video has. Quote
Tim McG Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 (edited) My problem is the child was already crying at the start of the video. This would clearly indicate he already got scratched by the cat. No it doesn't. I think that this thread could be an interesting example of a psychotherapy study. Maybe some of you are reading waaaay too much into this little snippet. Has it occurred to you that maybe the child had been crying for who knows how long and maybe they thought that the cat (new?) would calm it down? "No, mommy! I don't want that cat on my bed!" SMACK - or some such... Of course, it could be another story - maybe one dreamed up here, but the bottom line is that we just don't know, do we? Striking a cat is wrong and it's no surprise that the cat struck back and, no, the person(s) filming and/or posting it aren't to blame either. Maybe it's to prove a point... or..... we don't know do we? Oh c'mon. Why else would the kid be crying? You know, I have never been to Japan, but I am fairly certain it exists and I really don't need proof. By the same token, kids don't cry [or retaliate] without provocation. TBH, I think you are assuming far more about the child's crying. Edited May 7, 2012 by GoodSpeak Quote

That crying clearly isn't the cry of a kid who was just surprised. Women have high-pitched voices, too. And this voice sounds far more mature than a brother or sister's voice. You know, with all due respect, it sure seems to me that there is an awful lot of justifying going on here and I would hazard to guess there are a fair amount of folks posting who don't have kids making some pretty terrible assumptions. Just sayin'. Edited May 7, 2012 by GoodSpeak Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 Relax..........Just a kid and a cat. Happens hundreds of times a minute. Quote
rostasi Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 Goodster, Like usual, you're at your height of illogic. Next time I need some tables turned, I'll see if you're available. Quote

Whatever, Dude. Maybe you think crying and hurt children are funny. I, however, do not. Do you have kids? Have a nice day. Relax..........Just a kid and a cat. Happens hundreds of times a minute. No doubt. My kids, when they were little, were scratched by our cats as well. Putting that stuff on YouTube as some sort of "humorous" event is just plain wrong, IMHO. Bad parenting to say the very least. Edited May 7, 2012 by GoodSpeak Quote
.:.impossible Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 Ok but kids DO cry without "provocation". Let's just call a GIF a GIF and be on our way. Quote
Noj Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 No way, I'm so questioning the parenting instincts of all types of folks on this thread. Sheesh, you think you know somebody. Quote
JSngry Posted May 7, 2012 Author Report Posted May 7, 2012 Well, just remember who it was told you don't fuck with a cat. Quote
Quincy Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 Reminded me of Shawn's cat. I would shake that cat's paw, other than it would bloody mine if I did, so I will salute instead. Quote
.:.impossible Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 My parenting instinct with regard to cats is don't keep them. I've been around enough kids and I've been around enough cats to know that there is way to much unpredictability in that equation for my well-being. I just watched the video. Poor kid. Poor cat. No idea who's behind the camera, but they were fanning a flame and got exactly what they wanted. Quote
