I saw the Jesse Davis Quitet this week at Smalls in NYC. I have become a big fan of him. He is one heck of an alto player. I bought his new CD and I've listened to it several times already. Anyone else here enjoy his playing?

Ironic you'd bring him up as just this past weekend I refilled the CD case for my car and among the "long forgotten" discs I pulled from the binders was a number of his earlier recordings on Concord. I wasn't aware of a new CD but I am definitely looking forward to hearing his older discs. The Cannonball influence is pretty strong but I still dig him.

jesse, peter washington, phil harper

I saw him when he was a "young lion" and caught him a few years back. Might it have been with Hargrove? It wasn't Sherman Irby any more, but if it was Davis he's getting Irbyesque in weight.

davis is a heavyweight in more ways than weight.
