This is an expanded version of an article I wrote for Bloom Magazine about a year and a half ago, in which I reconstructed (via extensive reading of both Hoagy's memoirs, including the unpublished 1932 manuscript Jazzbanders, and spring 1924 Bloomington and Indiana University newspapers) Hoagy Carmichael and Bix Beiderbecke's time together in Bloomington in the spring of 1924:

The Road to Stardust: Hoagy Carmichael, Bix Beiderbecke, and a Legendary Indiana Springtime

Thanks for taking the time to read it, colinmce. It was interesting to walk around Bloomington determining the places where the Wolverines had played; the Williams store on the downtown square is still in operation! (Though they long ago dropped music from their line of stocked products.)

It's a pity I'm not more interested in the music my city has produced - there could be some interesting, albeit risky, walks:

I'm interested! Several bands out of Manchester over the past 30 years that I've loved, that's for sure.

BillF, thanks for the tip on that book--just ordered it as a Christmas present for my stepson, who is a huge Smiths fan. :tup

Great! I bought it last year for my daughter who likes those Manchester bands - it's a question of generation, you know - and has felt nostalgic about the city since she moved to London.
