tonym Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 Can NASA get a copy of this to Mars? Might come in handy. Quote
vibes Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 I wonder what our non-American friends think of this stuff. Do you find it accurate? I'd love to hear some opinions. I read some information similar to this about Chinese people before going to China, and found much of it to be inaccurate. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 (edited) I like the part about being careful not to tip government employees and customs officials. That's for our Third World exchange students. Edited January 30, 2004 by connoisseur series500 Quote
Alexander Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 I'm always fascinated by cultural and travel guides about America for foreigners. It's so interesting to see how Americans are seen by others and it see what "ordinary" manners, beliefs, customs, and practices are amazing to non-American eyes! I can certainly see where people around the world think of all Americans as rich. The culture shock for someone from an extremely poor country must be staggering when they visit America... Quote

Most things are so similar to european culture or probably common to all western cultures that they would not be worth mentioning. I like the "vulgar gesture" warning (page 13) Quote
Claude Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 (edited) A more complete alien guide to the USA (... and the World and Everything) is available here: H2G2 Check this entry: Driving Etiquette - USA Edited January 30, 2004 by Claude Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 30, 2004 Report Posted January 30, 2004 I assume the "driving etiquette" entry contradicts the "obscene gesture" entry above? I mean, how can you possibly drive a car without extending your middle finger regularly? Quote
