I was just corresponding with a friend about Gene Ammons & Dodo Marmarosa: Jug & Dodo - originally issued as a Prestige LP 2fer and later reissued by Fantasy on CD.

There is no recording engineer listed - just Rudy Van Gelder as remastering engineer on the Prestige LPs and Kirk Felton as remastering engineer on the CD. Also, no producer/a&r person is lsted.

I got to wondering if this was material that was recorded by Argo/Cadet that had to be turned over to Prestige because Gene Ammons was under contract to Prestige when the recordings were made. I think that may have been the case with Gene Ammons: Live! in Chicago also.

Though if that were the case, I wonder why Prestige ended up with the Marmarosa trio recordings that are a part of this set. I doubt that Dodo Marmarosa was under contract to Prestige.

Any thoughts or information?

Yes, these were Argo/Chess releases. I believe the tapes were smuggled out of the Chess vault and delivered to Prestige for a payment. A Marmarosa/Bill Hardman was done at the same time and I believe those tapes remained with the Chess holdings. This latter date was booted by Charly/Affinity.

There were several Gene Ammons albums recorded, while Jug was contracted to Prestige, for Chess in the period Aug 1961 - May 1962. Here's a list of what I know about:

Dig him (with S Stitt) - Argo 697 (Aug 61) (reissued on Prestige as 'We'll be together again' PR7606 (OJC701))

Just Jug - Argo 698 (Aug 61) (reissued on Prestige as 'Live in Chicago' PR7495 (OJC395))

Blue groove - Unissued (Apr 62) (first issue in 1982 on Prestige MPP2514 - not reissued on CD)

Preachin' - unissued on Argo (May 62) (first issue on Prestige 7270 (OJC792))

Jug & Dodo - unissued on Argo (May 62) (first issue on Prestige PRLP24021 (PRCD24021))

There was also a 45 recorded for Chess - I can't stop loving you/My babe (May 62) (issued in the 'Soul jazz giants' anthology and on CD in 'Legends of acid jazz' PR24188)

In addition, he made 'official' dates for Verve with Sonny Stitt (2), and one for PJ with Groove Holmes. Also an 'unofficial' one for Winley with Howard McGhee (which Chess seem to have acquired and reissued on Argo). I've read in one of the post prison sleeve notes (I think) that Jug often corresponded with Bobby Weinstock, wanting to be assured that there were still unissued albums in the can which could serve to keep his memory alive with the public until he was released, so it looks like Weinstock was well motivated to grab what he could. Why he didn't get the Winley album I don't know.

acording to the dodo marmarosa bio/discography by saleman and grob (flights of the vout bug), albany, georgia 2009: "as ammons at the time of recording was contractually bound to the prestige label, argo had to sell this sessionto prestige." the trio sides by marmarosa from 1961 are sponsored and supervised by jack tracy, former editor of chicago based down beat magazin, and joe segal.

keep boppin´
