Patti Page died New Year's Day.

Her LA Times obituary suggests that she and Eddy Arnold were the first to sing what came to be known as "countrypolitan". I had always associated Chet Atkins with that sound, but the Times gives credit to Mitch Miller.

I also didn't realize that The Tennessee Waltz was 1) such a monster hit and 2) as early as 1950.

She was a huge star when I was a kid in the 1950's. Her "Tennessee Waltz" is one of my earliest musical memories, having been released when I was five. At the time, I didn't understand the phrase "my friend stole my sweetheart from me".

Years later, I discovered that the B-side of the original 78 is the wonderful "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus", featuring Buck Clayton and Haywood Henry in the backing band. And yes, that is Buck playing the trumpet on "Tennessee Waltz".

RIP.

She did at least three jazz-tinged albums with Pete Rugolo for Mercury. At least one of them made it to CD.

And her Christmas album has one of my all-time favorite record covers:

coincidentally, this was a vinyl i listened to both christmas and new years, and recalling her 'sound.' it seems to me patti was one of the first vocal multitrackers. one layered track on the christmas recording must have 24 voices.
