Who's Afraid of the Big Band Monk

The local library used to have this LP, and I checked it out once, but I don't remember anything on it. I just remember it was a 2-LP set. But I can't find it at AMG or the Jazz Discography site.

Does anyone know which session I'm thinking of, and was it ever released or re-released?

Was it the studio one with the Oliver Nelson arrangements? That would account for one of the two LPs. I think it was called Monk's Blues.

The other might have been that session from 12/30/63 at Lincoln Center- the band w/ Thad, Eddie Bert, Phil Woods, Nick Travis et al. Released as a CD two-fer; Monk Big Band and Quartet in Concert.

Those are both Columbia releases and therefore would have made a logical pairing for an LP two-fer (with the big band cuts only from the live session).

I wish I knew! I’m pretty sure it was an original issue of some sort (not a reissue), cuz I remember it had the Columbia 360 Sound label on it. And it was a 2-LP set as well. Like I said, I’m only going from memory, but you’d think that AMG or some other jazz discography would list it!

That's what it is all right, the MONK'S BLUES LP coupled with the original Lincoln Center LP, minus "Played Twice", which was quartet. Part of a little series of two-fers w/pencil sketch covers. Another was by the Donald Byrd-Gigi Gryce group. Don't know what else was in that series, if anything.

Sorry - reissue, not original.

Groovy! Thanks for the info, Jim! I wonder if the title of the reissue was tongue-in-cheek, given how roundly Monk’s Blues was panned?
