It’s not a long answer, because the answer is …. nothing. Now here’s a question that yields a longer answer. What books would have entered the public domain if we were still operating under reasonable, pre-1978 copyright laws? Here’s a little list that comes from Duke University’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain:" Quote
GA Russell Posted March 24, 2013 Report Posted March 24, 2013 At MobileRead.com, the blame is given to Sonny Bono and the Disney Corporation. Quote
John Litweiler Posted March 24, 2013 Report Posted March 24, 2013 As a hack who did not have to pay to have a copyright renewed this year, I like the current copyright law. Surely the heirs of Philip Dick, Ian Fleming, Billie Holiday, etc. feel as I do. Quote
ejp626 Posted March 24, 2013 Report Posted March 24, 2013 I really don't think anyone's mind will be changed at this point. You basically either agree (with the Founders) that there is a meaningful place for a robust public domain in the U.S. or you side with Disney in their efforts to establish a perpetual copyright. I believe that our culture today would have been irreparably harmed and impoverished had the musicians and writers of the 1920s-1970s operated under today's copyright regime, and there really isn't anything anyone could say that would change my mind. While I am sure it won't last (and there have been attempts to change it), at least at the moment, Canada is operating under rules roughly equivalent to pre-1978 U.S. copyright law. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 25, 2013 Report Posted March 25, 2013 Another journalist who has to embellish his work with 'facts' that he makes up on the spot. Alfred E. Neuman was not on the cover of the first issue of Mad. What else did he make up? Quote
