George Lewis writes that Sun Ra "explicitly connects his music with projects of identity, philosophy, historical recovery, and mysticism. He explored the role of black people in the creation of civilization, and maintained that music could both change individual moral values and the affect the fate of the world." Musically, coming out of the Fletcher Henderson band and Bronzeville floor shows, embracing gospel music, bop and the large ensemble explorations of Duke Ellington and Tadd Dameron, the Sun Ra Arkestra presents it all, as you'll hear tonight on Blue Lake Public Radio, 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. eastern, with "Out on Blue Lake" at midnight including a 2005 live broadcast from our studios by Henry Grimes and Sun Ra's principle alto saxophonist Marshall Allen.
