Justin V Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 The Canadian clarinetist, composer and arranger is 90 today. Although he recorded for Verve in the '50s and has been very active as a performer and educator in Canada, it seems that he doesn't get much recognition in the States. Here's wishing a happy birthday to a wonderful musician. Quote
Clunky Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 Happy birthday indeed, hadn't heard of him until quite recently but have since then enjoyed an RCA side and "Atlantic Suite" on Sackville. Very good arranger, fine sides. Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 I'm leaving in the next few minutes to attend a Birthday Party for Phil.He has a gig on Thursday, playing with a terrific young pianist, David Braid. They'll be completely spontaneous...no set chords, keys, tempo, nuthin'! And the audience will love it: instant composition! Who'd a thunk it of a 90-year-old?(Clunky, see if you can track down a newer Nimmons quartet release on Sackville, The Sands of Time... Quote
sidewinder Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 A Canadian jazz institution, for sure. Congratulations to him ! Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 Just to follow up, the party for Phil last night was a wonderful event, with about a hundred invited guests at the Canadian Music Centre. Phil and family were in attendance, and Phil did what he does so well -- played clarinet, spontaneously composing with David Braid at the piano.BTW, the CMC's website offers some Nimmons recordings, of his performances, and compositions played by others in both jazz and classical genres... http://www.musiccentre.ca/recordings/search/quicksearch_process?keywords=phil+nimmons&op=&form_build_id=form-adc78a2d015bd256dc34d06c79d9a2ba&form_id=products_quick_search_form Quote
John Tapscott Posted June 4, 2013 Report Posted June 4, 2013 (edited) Oh boy, is Phil really 90? Really enjoy his recordings, especially The Atlantic Suite and especially the expanded 2 CD re-issue. Caught the band live several times. There's no doubt about it - he's a terrific original composer for larger ensembles (10-16 persons strong). Hence his band's names - Nimmons 'N Nine. Nimmmons 'N Nine Plus Six. Happy 90th to Phil. Edited June 4, 2013 by John Tapscott Quote
Peter Friedman Posted June 6, 2013 Report Posted June 6, 2013 Yes, Nimmons has played an important role in jazz in Canada. Too bad he is not well known by jazz listeners in the USA and other countries. Quote
