One thing I found myself wondering about was other LoTR illustrations in whatever country before the movies took over control of the imagery. There's not likely to be much at the level of these 1993 images but I am curious. A theme there about how films come to govern and own the books they draw on. I don't even know where or whether these illustrations were published - just passing on a link there and haven't investigated further....
