Anyone ever run into this problem, where the Windows Media Player simply won't come up--something about server error? I tried some troubleshooting online, but got nowhere. Would it make sense to use System Restore? Would it make sense to download a new media player?

By the way, I'm using windows 8. That alone probably accounts for this mess.

I'd rather uninstall the Media Player and download and install the latest version available from Microsoft.

Do you have several different Media Players and/or disc burners installed? This can cause problems because all these programs partly use the same scripts - if one software changes anything, the others won't recognize it anmore.

I bought my Windows 8 notebook last summer and in contrast to XP never had a problem.

... but take care you have installed all the Windows updates!
