medjuck
I've just listened on Wolfgang's Vault to the only concert Monk gave in 1975 . I was surprised how great it was. I then looked up what was written about it in Robin Kelly's bio and it's obvious that he hadn't heard the concert and relies on contemporary critics who didn't particularly like it-- especially Monk's playing. Am I crazy, or as is often the case, are the critics just wrong? (I should add the the notes on the website is even more enthusiastic than me, but they tend to shill a little bit. However there's an interesting comment by someone who attended it.) Edited October 11, 2015 by medjuck
AllenLowe
not surprised; Kelly has an account of a very late concert Monk did in Central Park, that I was at, at which he was practically comatose. Quoting others, Kelly says how great he played; definitely not true.
