Beautiful music from this little noticed Welsh composer. Neoclassicism meets pastoralism. Echoes of Stravinsky, Tippett, Britten.

No 2 - sounded wonderful this morning. Britten clicked with me instantly all those years ago but it took a lot longer to get inside Tippett's music (in terms of enjoying it and being engaged by it). No. 4 on here is a gem too.

Haas: in vain

Extraordinary piece. I'd love to hear this one live.

Your repeated postings showing the Schneider Quartet set remind me to pull if off the shelf and continue working my way through these glorious recordings.

A few RVW pieces in a more neoclassical style than is usually associated with him, scattered over various discs:

  • Violin Concerto
  • Concerto for Double String Orchestra
  • Concerto Grosso

The lambkins are still there.

Caruso's first recording session - ten sides from April 11, 1902. Crude, with audible mistakes, but still amazing. You could say that this is the date that the record business grew up.

Or, alternatively, the date when recorded classical music mythologies started to be constructed (one of those smiley things spelling out the (partially) tongue-in-cheek nature of this comment) .
