Chet! I´ve seen and enjoyed great trumpet players - Enrico Rava, Lester Bowie (I will never forget his instrumental version of Tom Waits´ "Broken Bicycles" that he played in his doctor´s coat in a barn at Jazz Baltica) Randy Brecker and Roy Hargrove - but I never caught Mr Baker - too bad!

Congrats, Pim. Fantastic project and a labour of love, indeed. Inspired me a lot. Should be part of a book. Unbelievable: To my knowledge there´s no substantial biography of Mal Waldron. That´s the more regrettable not only because of his fantastic music. Above all it´s his life lines leading him to Japan and Europe that would be insightful and adventurous to follow.

..."recently"? I suppose you mean those "1954 unissed Atlantic Session" with Brew Moore? Surely superb Fresh Sound offering - but its year of release is 2011! Wish there would be more music to be dug up that this unique trumpet beatnik has recorded during his short life.

"Permanent" - or as it is titled in Europe "Play Mode" - is surely a soulful classic. Randy´s rendition of "Wild is the Wind" is maybe the definitive version of this haunting ballad. But the record´s real stunner is the chilling midtempo groove of "When I get over you" - that always knocks me out. In my humble opinion this is one of the most ravishing beautiful vocal albums - and stays so - "permanent" (ly).

So sad! What a stellar artist. Not only a free spirit and expressive Reedist but also really important for the advance of European jazz. Simion incorporated the folk of his homeland Romania, especially Transylvania, into his music - up to the instruments: Listen to the cymbalon on his album "Third Rhapsody". And he founded his own label, "7 Dreams Records". Many excellent recordings, of course as Pim said, above all with Mal Waldron (my favourite: "Misterioso - Live in Zürich") but also several excellent ones under his own name. RIP
