This superb live recording from '81 is my "reference" M5.  

A very very good Mahler 5 .... actually these Audite releases are overall outstanding ....

While I was running some errands, I heard part of a broadcast of a performance of this work by the Philadelphia Orchestra.  Pulled this out to hear the piece uninterrupted.
