Peter Friedman Posted April 1 Report Share Posted April 1 The first Haydn set I have listened to from a large number of remastered recordings on VOX from the Fine Arts Quartet and the Dekany Quartet. I believe a rather rarely mentioned Mahler 1 contender is Herbert Kegel whose performance with Dresdner Philharmonie from 1979 (released in 1981 on Eterna) mirrors in a passionate and colourful treatment .... and speaking about "left fielders", what about the "live" recording by Kyril Kondrashin and NDRSO @ Concertgebouw on March 7th, 1981 .... quite some choices .... Oh how interesting. Isn't it mysterious how we instantly click with some artists -- while others remain opaque, no matter how much we try!? Berlioz was a composer for whom I had an almost immediate affinity. I first heard Symphonie fantastique in college, and I've been captivated by his music ever since.
