I recall seeing Lee Andrews on American Bandstand when I was 12 years old and "Teardrops" was a current hit. Dick Clark interviewed him and he recounted how he was once in an auto accident on the night of a gig and took 30 stitches in his leg. He said that he got the stitches, went to the gig and performed. At the time I thought, why would he do that? Why not go home and recuperate? I had no idea at that age of how the music business worked - especially for black artists.

Zappa has said this song absolutely knocked him out- he ranked it as one of the most abstract lyrics he ever heard in all of doo wop music that turned  a big influence on his style-  the B side to Tear Drops: "girl around the corner"--- i still need this on 78-- listen to the lyric......

that's a pretty flipped flip side!

Only just found out that Andrews (full name Lee Andrews Thompson) was the son of Beachey Thompson, a long time member of the Dixie Hummingbirds 1944-1991. Talk about a musical family!
