Trumpeter John Marshall

Does anyone know his work? Formerly with Buddy Rich and the Vanguard Orchestra, he’s been in Germany with the WDR Band for a decade or so. Picked up a 1996 CD by by him, “Keep On Keepin’ On” (Mons), and was impressed -- very lyrical, swinging player -- ordered several of his European label small group recordings. A good deal of those can be heard on Spotify. If you're interested further, they can be found on Amazon, but only if you plug in Marshall's name and the full titles of the albums -- "John Marshall" alone won't do it.

Really like his playing and his musical philosophy - has a comprehensive knowledge of lesser known compositions from the bop era. Via Spotify have heard many of his albums: Bopera House and Theme of No Repeat are favorites.

My favorite CD's  are  'Keep On Keepin’ On',  'Marshall Arts' (with Ferdinand Povel) and 'The Music of Gigi Gryce'. (with Rein de Graaff and others). I've bought these albums during concerts.

I am a big fan of John Marshall's recordings. I have 7 of his recordings as leader on the Organic label ( European), plus the one on Mons , one on Blue Jack (European), and the one on VSOP.

Marshall is a sideman on 2 additional CDs on Blue Jack.

His recordings are well worth checking out.

Fine swinging player whose recordings I enjoy.  I own a couple on the Organic label with Grant Stewart and Tardo Hammer as sidemen, plus I've heard several on Spotify. The CD  referenced above by Cyril with Ferdinand Povel is an excellent recording.

Looking forward to the arrival of the Marshall albums I ordered. My friend Bill Kirchner mentioned that Marshall is showcased nicely on an abum that composer-arranger Mike Abene did with the WDR Band.

Here's John Marshall sounding great with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra in 1994 on Thad's classic "Low Down" (on the changes of "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You.") Also, board member Michael Weiss on piano. There's youtube footage of Marshall also playing this tune with Mel and the band  in 1980.
