Free For All Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 I heard he passed away in Omaha. Don't know much about him other than his connection with the Basie band. Anyone have any info? Quote
mikeweil Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 (edited) Wasn't he one some Mingus album? Edit: Was probably my confusing him with trumpeter Eddie Preston - sorry. Edited February 28, 2004 by mikeweil Quote
mikeweil Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 Can't confirm Mingus, but found he played with Johnny Otis and a host of other R & B stars, Little Esther (Phillips), Roy Milton, Lucky Millinder, Pee Wee Crayton, Ruth Borwn, Sugar Pie Desanto a.o. in all stages of his career. Quote
JSngry Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 Sorta the Marshall Royal of R&B. An unsung hero, for sure. Somebody needs to start a Johnny Otis thread around here. RIP, and thanks. Quote
chris olivarez Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 His daughter is the singer Laura Love. Quote
paul secor Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 I bought his autobiography, A Thousand Honey Creeks Later - My Life in Music from Basie to Motown, a couple of years ago, but never got around to reading it. I'm in the midst of another book right now, but I'll probably go to that next, even though it bothers me that his passing will be the catalyst for me doing so. Quote
chris olivarez Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Oh man does that bring back memories!!! Back in my college days some dude named Alfie turned me on to all kind of music. Johnny Otis,The Jean Luc Ponty/King Kong album,Blodwyn Pig and Preston are some that I remember.I picked up on the other three and always meant to get the Preston one but I never did and of course you can't find it anywhere now.Oh well. JSngry Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 I found OMAHA BBQ in the cutout bins about 20 years ago, and it's a trip. Most of it has the "Sea Hunt" sound, which is what I call it when the vibes play sustained chords with the tremelo/vibtato/whatever turned ALL the way up. But the last 2-3 cuts are good ol' jump blues. Emmenintly satisfying, they are. Quote
mmilovan Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 As I can remember from various sources, he played with Basie during non documented 1943-44 period. Quote
