ghost of miles Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 (edited) Yesterday a friend gave me her late ex-husband's original 78 edition of Norman Granz's The Jazz Scene set. The records are in great shape, as is the booklet, but at some point the cover went missing. I know it's a longshot, but would anybody have any leads on a copy of the original cover (it was black and simply said, "The Jazz Scene," with "Produced by Norman Granz" in the lower left hand corner). I'll probably have to settle for putting the 78s and booklet into a modern generic binder or album of some sort, but would love to track down a standalone original. Hot Ptah Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 (edited) There is an entire original for sale at Revolution Records in Kansas City, Missouri. Miles is the employee in charge of selling it. His schedule is sporadic. The store closes about 6 p.m. each day and they don't have voice mail. You have to call the store during the day, tell whoever answers that you want to buy a special product from Miles and leave your phone number. Then you have to follow up. This is not the most organized business. It's charm is its informality and lack of order. Edited August 13, 2016 by Hot Ptah Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 Dream on. http://www.rootsvinylguide.com/ebay_items/the-jazz-scene-6x-78-set-photo-folio-book-11-of-5000-signed-norman-granz Quote
Hot Ptah Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 It will be much less expensive at Revolution Records. Quote
JSngry Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 Wait, are you saying that the chick got the dude's records in the divorce and then held on to them until after he died? That's the Jazz ONCE Seen! Quote

Hot Ptah Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 Just a cover alone will be nearly impossible to find, I would imagine. But the original at Revolution Records has the original cover. If someone wanted the original cover badly enough they might buy another whole copy, photos, records and all. Quote
JSngry Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 But if they wanted to sell it badly enough, they'd answer the damn phone. Quote

JSngry Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 I appreciate that, really, but it's been an issue on weekdays as well. Sounds like they prefer to be local, and god knows that is needed now more than ever, so good on and for them. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 They are not trying to be local. They are disorganized. You might say that they are incompetent. Quote
JSngry Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 But that can work locally, at least for a while. It's ok, really. Part of "the problem" is this notion that "competence" can and will be standardized. Fuck it, if you have a key that opens the door, you remain competent enough. And when you don't, you don't. All I wanted was a quote, so I would know for sure that I couldn't afford it. Yeah, it was irksome that they didn't ever answer the phone, but if they got bands in there and if the key keeps opening the door, hey, right on, seriously. Quote
