He's not exactly explicit in this video. Assuming he *is* retiring, I wish him well. I was privileged to hear him on his last West Coast tour a few years ago.

The interview is from 2006.  Shortly before his health problems forced him to take time off, I saw him at the Detroit Jazz Fest and he sounded great.  I later read that he had been having dental issues and hadn't been happy with his performance, but Sonny has always been so hard on himself.  He still sounded like the Saxophone Colossus to me.  I had front-row seats for a subsequent concert that ended up being canceled, but I'm thankful that I was able to see him (with the late Bob Cranshaw) three times.
