Justin V Posted October 8, 2019 Report Posted October 8, 2019 There is a newer reissue of this. Part of me wants to get it, but the other part of me says that any difference between the 2005 and 2015 versions would be negligible. Quote
HutchFan Posted October 8, 2019 Report Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) Prompted by the MAX ROACH talk elsewhere on the board: Pictures in a Frame (Soul Note, 1979) with Cecil Bridgewater, Odean Pope, and Calvin Hill I love this record. Admittedly, there's less FIRE than Harper brought to the band on, say, Live in Tokyo -- but I don't mind that. This music just breathes a bit more; it's less unrelenting, more lyrical. ... I'm likely in the minority preferring this LP over the MRQ records with Harper. "But," as Stuart Smalley would say, "that's... O.K." 43 minutes ago, JSngry said: 5 stars. 19 minutes ago, soulpope said: 5 stars. And an unrecognized masterpiece. Edited October 8, 2019 by HutchFan Quote

Justin V Posted October 9, 2019 Report Posted October 9, 2019 I hadn't listened to this one in a few years. I just googled guitarist Howard Collins and found out that he passed away in 2015. He was a fine guitarist who sounded great with Lewis. His less-is-more style reminds me of Jim Hall. Quote

Gheorghe Posted October 9, 2019 Report Posted October 9, 2019 This was one of my first Messengers Albums, I later purchased the CD also. It was a highlight of our "jazz gang" at highschool, a lot of Youngsters came to my place and we would listen to it. Everybody dug "Moanin´" . And this edition of the Messengers was one of my favourites: Valery Ponomarev tp, Bobby Watson as, Dave Schnitter ts, James Williams p, Irving on bass. But when I saw them for the first time, Billy Pierce had replaced David Schnitter and I think on bass was Charles Fambrough, former with McCoy Tyner if I remember right. The only shortcoming on this album is that it´s too short, Maybe 35 minutes only…….. Quote
