Much though I love Baby Face Willette, and play all his albums a great deal, AND idolise Fred Jackson, his Blue Notes aren't as good as the two he made for Argo. There's nowt better than 'Behind the eight ball' in my view. Have a listen to 'Song of the universe'. MG Quote
duaneiac Posted November 28, 2018 Report Posted November 28, 2018 A pleasant way to ease into some holiday music since this disc has no worn out, overdone songs or carols. All of the material was newish (as of 1991 when this album was recorded) and only 2 of the 12 tracks could be considered somewhat familiar -- "A Christmas Love Song" by Johnny Mandel and the Bergmans and "Christmas In The City" by Jay Leonhart. Ms. Dearie gives sensitive, yet not saccharine, performances on all the songs here. With Mike Renzi, Jay Berliner, Jay Leonhart and Grady Tate. Quote

And they're both on it. Lafitte was quite influenced by Coleman Hawkins I think, and that's something I like. Edited November 28, 2018 by Bluesnik missing info Quote
