medjuck Posted June 26, 2018 Report Posted June 26, 2018 Went to a rock festival this past weekend and the first act I saw was Pharoah Sanders! He was at the by far smallest of the 3 stages but the generally young audience really got into it. I was worried because he hobbled across the stage and I thought he might have trouble hearing since he kept asking them to turn up his monitor. But once he began playing he was very strong. At one point while someone else was soloing he shuffled to the back of the stage and I presumed he was going to sit down but instead he picked up a couple of very large tambourines with which he joined in. Crowd loved him though not as much as they loved Kamasai Washington whom I saw next at a large stage. I liked him but Pharoah was a hard act to follow. The other jazz I heard was the music used to introduce Jack White: Artie Shaw's theme "Nightmare". Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 26, 2018 Report Posted June 26, 2018 Is he still in the "mellowed with age" style or does he still tear it up? I would guess a younger crowd at a rock festival wouldn't be that impressed with "I Want to Talk About You" done in middle-Trane style. Quote
medjuck Posted June 27, 2018 Author Report Posted June 27, 2018 He tore it up even when he ended with what I think was "A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square". Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted June 27, 2018 Report Posted June 27, 2018 Pharoah and Neil is definitely a festival in and of itself Quote
