So after not buying even one CD for about 12 months I began to fleamarket shop from amazon sellers. First three I bought were fine and good value. Nos four and five arrived with broken arms and missing teeth. Meanwhile madness struck and I ordered a new and full price CD, which was faulty and would not play. I had actually been toying with going back to CD but - such a hassle...

Do what you just did with 5 LP titles from those same locations and report back with your success there. :) The used LP market is a total crapshoot. Even places like Dusty Groove don't know how to grade used vinyl. At least broken jewel cases can be swapped/replaced. Don't know what happened with that new one but I imagine you can return it for another one. Was it a CD-R by chance?

How old is your SACD player, and when was the SACD made? I have two SACD players, and some of the newly manufactured discs are not recognized by the older player. My Hi-Fi dealer told me there is no player on the market that is guaranteed to play any CD. OTOH the older player plays some old discs the newer one rejects. Oh well ...

Yes the SACD player is ten years old - many are, I guess, as very few are made any more. The brand new disk plays, but at one or two points just can't. I've three or four old SACDs which now have drop outs or jams, but all others play fine - so who knows, and I am not going to buy another one just to a/b. Probably.
