Rooster_Ties Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I was just thinking about Grant Green's "Solid" - with Joe Henderson & James Spaulding, and that got me thinking about other great alto/tenor combos (without trumpet, nor sacbut), but with just one tenor and one alto as the only horns, backed by whatever else - piano trio, maybe vibes, maybe just drums & bass. One other that sprung to mind was an excellent album by Gary Thomas (tenor) with Greg Osby, called "Pariah's Pariah" I'm sure there are hundreds of others, and a couple dozen I'm forgetting. What other great tenor/alto albums are really outstanding??? Quote
pryan Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 Freddie Redd - SHADES OF REDD (w/ Tina Brooks & Jackie McLean) Quote
jlhoots Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 Lovano / Osby Quintet: Friendly Fire (Jason Moran on piano). To be totally accurate Lovano & Osby also play other horns on the CD. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 23, 2003 Author Report Posted April 23, 2003 (Gary Thomas plays flute on a few tracks, on the album I mentioned up above. Still, the album is mostly tenor/alto.) Quote
brownie Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 Art Pepper and Warne Marsh (on several tracks) in Art Pepper's neglected Contemporary album 'The Way It Was'. Quote
BruceH Posted April 25, 2003 Report Posted April 25, 2003 Just listened to this last week, brownie. One of my favorite Pepper albums, even though technically it's more of a compilation. I vote for anything by Konitz/Marsh. What a sound they had! Quote
