In its first few decades, The Today Show would feature live jazz performances from time to time. One I've been looking for was an early 1978 performance by the Jazz Piano Quartet, in early 1978, unfortunately, I only heard the announcement of it coming up right as I was leaving for work. I don't think it was the same quartet as on the RCA Victor LP (Hank Jones, Dick Hyman, Marian McPartland and Roland Hanna), but it has been a few decades since I heard that promo. If anyone runs across a video, please share it.

Here are some miscellaneous peformance videos that I found in my research:

Nellie Lutcher:

If you haven't heard Nellie Lutcher's appearance on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz, you should check it out. I think I uploaded it to archive.org but if not, I hope that I can do so soon.

JIm Hall on The tonight Show 1992:

From Australian TV, a solo piano set without an audience by Duke Ellington:

I am guessing that the date may be circa February 7, 1970, as he was touring Australia at that time.

The set list is not in Timmer's Ellingtonia discography (Fourth Edition).

In my brother's basement in Philly, there is a reel-to-reel tape of Dave Brubeck on the Today show, circa 1978 or so.  It was the quartet he had with his sons, one of whom played the Moog.  It was around the time of the album with Dave in a space suit.  I vividly remember Jane Pauley mispronouncing his name!  At the time, I was in junior high and getting into jazz, and I was excited to see Brubeck on TV.

Did she think he was Robert Redford?

Who knows what lurks in the dark psyches of TV morning show hosts? I also recall that Gene Shalit seemed to know a thing or two about jazz, although at that stage in my musical development, I was easily impressed.

there is this audio from a tv broadcast:

1970/71 is when kirk, lee morgan, etc. were fighting to get on tv shows.

the "Jazz and People Movement"

i.e.

https://www.ctproduced.com/freddie-jazz-and-people-movement/

they got on some/few, but not nearly as much headway as they had hoped.

kirk pretty much gave up on that movement after 1971.

kirk invited some old timers for the first portion of the broadcast.

I'd love to listen to Kirk's radio show ("Radio Free Rahsaan"). Any idea where it might be available?

I caught have a show on a local radio once, but couldn't find anything, let alone the whole series, anywhere.
