JamesAHarrod Posted 18 hours ago Report Posted 18 hours ago Discovery Records has been one of my main research areas for years. When I requested copies of AFM contracts for the label I was disappointed that Local 47 did not have any on file for 1947, the date that Jepson and Tom Lord attributed to the Phil Moore compositions and Calvin Jackson solo piano performances. As it turns out there were no contracts as Moore recorded these works independently in late 1947 and early 1948. https://jazzresearch.com/albert-marx-discovery-records-part-1/ Jim Quote

I am aware of Phil Moore and have a few 78s by the Phil Moore Four (on Victor and Black & White) but was not really aware of the existence of these recordings (and their somewhat later reissue on Verve). By all accounts Phil Moore must have been a relatively big name throughout the 40s, but he is one of those who ended up being almost totally forgotten because he was ill-served by reissues in later years when that period became "collectable".
