romualdo Posted 40 minutes ago Posted 40 minutes ago I've just noticed an anomaly regarding Dial 10" LP 217 "Night Music" pertaining to the track Night In Abyssinia (D1130-A) - it's listed in the Jazz Discography (see below) but not in Lord. Is it a version of A Night in Tunisia? There is no track by that name listed in Lord also when a search is performed. The LP is listed as Various Artists but it's primarily Howard McGhee's material. The track is listed as a McGhee/Edwards composition on the original LP label plus it does exist on the LP (I've seen an image of the 4 tracks on side 2 of the LP, coinciding with the 4 label titles). I have a list of all (I presume) the Dial (78/10") releases & D1130-A is not there. Maybe it's an alternate of another track but given this new title which did occur with certain Dial alternates. https://www.78discography.com/Dial.htm This track is not listed or present on any of my Dial releases (LPs & CDs, including the Dial Mosaic) Can anyone shed more light on this? Someone could listen to the track on the original 10" (if anyone has it). Big Beat Steve Posted 7 minutes ago Posted 7 minutes ago Of course I am not one of the lucky ones who owns Dial LP 217, but at any rate this is very odd indeed. That title would have been remembered if more widely known. For the record (literally ), "Night In Abyssinia" with matrix no. D1130-A is not listed in the JEPSEN discography, neither is it listed in BRUYNINCKX (neither in the printed edition nor in the updated pdf version). So its discogrpahical non-existence goes back a long way. But since it was on that 50s LP it cannot be a "late discovery" if it is listed on the jazzdisco site now. I wonder where the jazzdisco fellers got that matrix number from? If it wasn't just some clever guesswork this info must have come from somewhere (Not LP 217, so ...?). Amazing nobody ever has come across this track before to reissue it, neither the people at Spotlite (usually very thorough, aren't they?) nor the Jazz Club Basel that compiled the thoughtfully programmed gap-filling "McGhee Special" LP (JCB-20) in 1981. I just re-read the liner notes on Spotlite SPJ131 (written by Ross Russell, none less), and it is stated specifically that NINE tunes were recorded at that session on 3 December 1947. A total that does not leave room for "Night In Tunisia". Somehow this "Abyssinia" sounds almost like some mistitling à la Crown Records. Quote
