Hardbopjazz Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 Do you think if record companies would market jazz like they do top 40 music, jazz would sell just as well? Or Does jazz require one to think too much for the average person and it would never work marketing it like top 40? Quote
jazzbo Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 Throwing promotional money at it and putting it on Regis and Ellen and Leno and Letterman etc. couldn't HURT. I think it would help. Quote
Pete C Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 If they threw the kinds of money around for jazz as they do for pop they'd lose their shirts. As it is, they lose on most artists they promote and make it up on the few who become wildly popular. And when they lose their popularity, goodbye. Why do you think Columbia dropped Wynton Marsalis when his sales started dropping? Sure throwing big bucks at jazz would result in greater sales, but never enough to warrant the money spent. Why is it that so many jazz fans think it's just a matter of getting the word out? Face it, no matter how good the music you like is, most people don't, or won't, like it. Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 16, 2004 Report Posted April 16, 2004 I don't think they should promote it (jazz, non-pop, etc) the way they promote pop. I do think it would help if it were promoted differently however. Different audience. Quarter-page ads in the back of an obscure magazine aren't any better though. Look at what Organissimo has done!
