Little blurb from the jazz column of the Kansas City Star on Friday...

A free-jazz trio from the San Francisco area, Sound on Survival, appears at 10pm Monday (April 19th) at Balanca's, 1809 Grand Blvd.; cover is only $3.

The SOS members are saxophonist Marco Eneidi, bassist Lisle Ellis, and percussionist Peter Valsamis.

I'm probably going anyway, so I guess the question is -- anybody here ever heard of these guys?? What's the 411??

MARCO ENEIDI is an alto sax player whose sound remind me of Ornette Coleman even if he has been his own man from quite a time now.

He was a friend and partner of the late GLEN SPEARMAN and plays in the new (?) quintet of WILLIAM PARKER, along with ROB BROWN.

He has made some very good album on his own label (the name escape to me right now) and a great trio on EREMITE called CHERRY BOX with WILLIAM PARKER & DONALD ROBINSON. Check also the album of ROBINSON on CIMP, STRAIGHT LINES SKEWED where he plays fluently besides the drummer and the bassist, LISLE ELLIS.

LISLE ELLIS has been the partner of pianist PAUL PLIMLEY during a long period. They recorded together a beautiful album dedicated to Ornette Coleman untitled KALEIDOSCOPES on hat ART in 1992, where they cover his songbook.

He has played, among others, with JOE McPHEE (cf. SWEET FREEDOM - NOW WHAT on hat ART, featuring PAUL PLIMLEY.)

I know only one album under his name, but a great one, CHILDREN IN PERIL SUITE on MUSIC & ARTS. It's from 1997 and you find on it the usuel suspects, JOE MCPHEE and MARCO ENEIDI and also pianist DANA REASON and multi-instrumentalist, PETER APFELBAUM.

Like you can see, it's all in the family.

I know nothing about PETER VALSAMIS.

But, frankly, I think that you have a good to great show coming your way.

Up for the day-shift.

Thanks for the info, P.L.M -- much appreciated.

Sounds like a show I'm gonna need to take my earplugs too. I've got a set of "musicians earplugs" that cut the sound-levels equally across all frequencies, so it really is just like turning the volume down a touch.

Should be interesting, at the very least -- and probably more.

Let us know how the show is! I'll be seeing this group in 9 days in Vermont. My wife, aunt and uncle will be going with me, and I am a bit concerned that this show might be a bit too loud and free for them. They'll go to the show either way, I just would like to give them the opportunity to bring earplugs, if need be.

I highly recommend the disc on Eremite - Cherry Box - that PLM mentioned above.

Wow. Just got back from the show. Without amplification, they would have been the single loudest jazz group I've probably ever seen. And they were WITH amplification -- so they were REALLY god-damn loud.

BUT, they were also really amazing. :excited:

John B, please bring earplugs to the show -- for yourself, your wife, and your other relatives. They will NEED them. ^_^

Man, what a great group. I'm not nearly as into 'free' music as I was 10 years ago, but this group really has their shit together, in spades. The drummer, in particular, was really outstanding -- but hell, all three were.

They have a web-site, it turns out (http://www.soundonsurvival.com), and they're just starting a 25-date tour. Here's the dates...

April 16 - Oakland, CA - 21 Grand

April 17 - Salt Lake City - House of Coffee

April 19 - Kansas City, MO - The Pyro Room, 1809 Grand Blvd

April 20 - St. Louis, MO - Radio Cherokee

April 21 - Springfield, IL - Cafe Andiamo! Charlie's Club, 204 S. 6th Street

April 22, 23 - Chicago, IL - Velvet Lounge, 2128 1/2 S. Indiana Avenue

April 24 - Detroit, MI - Detroit Art Space

April 25 - Toronto, ON - The Music Gallery

April 26 - Montreal, PQ - la sala rossa (Just the trio)

April 27 - Montreal, PQ - casa obscura (with many Montreal guests, TBA)

April 28 - Johnson, VT - Johnson State

April 29 - Hyde Park, MA - Artists-At-Large Gallery, 37 Everett St.

April 30 - Cambridge, MA - Zeitgeist gallery (special guest Eric Zinmann) (article)

May 1 - Amherst, MA - Unitarian Meetinghouse, 121 North Pleasant St. (article on this series in the Valley Advocate)

May 2 - Syracuse, NY - Westcott Community Center

May 3 - Rochester, NY - Bop Shop

May 4 - Buffalo, NY - Hallwalls

May 5 - Pittsburgh, PA - Garfield Artworks

May 6 - Philadelphia, PA - Slought Foundation

May 9 - NYC - CBGB

May 11 - NYC - Tonic

May 12 - Brooklyn, NY - Overground series, the Pourhouse

May 13 - Kingston, NY - Uptown Gathering Place

May 14 - Middletown, CT - Buttonwood tree

May 25 - San Francisco - The Hemlock Tavern

If any of you have any interest at all in stuff like John Zorn, or Tim Berne, or 'out'-leaning John Gilmore and Marshall Allen --- get you ass out there and go hear this band (and take earplugs). They are well worth your time, and I'm sure it'll cost you like $5 or $10 (at most) to get in. (Hell, it was only $3 for me to hear them tonight.)

I'd hate for them to be playing to empty houses too -- and lord knows Free Jazz doesn't sell for shit in this world. Take a chance, why not??

:tup:tup:tup

PS: They've got a couple full-length audio-clips of a couple of their tunes, on their website: http://www.soundonsurvival.com

I wish they were playing down in TX, cuz Sangry -- I'm figuring you'd probably love these guys.

Thanks for the review RT! I am really excited about this show but will really need to give my aunt and uncle a chance to reconsider attending. This doesn't sound like it will be their speed at all.

The show in Vermont is free, so, if anyone is in the area and on the fence about checking out a show like this, this would be a perfect opportunity.

John B. - I hope you don't mind me quoting (in public) what you sent me in a PM, but since you said...

That sounds really exciting and really frightening.  I took them all to see Andrew Hill's quartet last year and that show was too free for my aunt and uncle.  I'll give them a heads up.  I, on the other hand, am looking forward to the show even more after reading your thoughts.

I also saw Hill's quartet last year (with Greg Tardy on tenor, and Nasheet Waits on drums, forget the bass player). This group last night was quite a bit more 'out/free' than Hill's group. And a whole hell of a lot LOUDER. You know your family better than anyone else -- but I can't imagine if they didn't like Hill much, that they could find anything of interest in this piano-less trio from last night.

I loved them, cuz they really made it work. I normally don't care much for music that is that free, though I do appreciate it on some level. But perhaps it was the venue (a bar that normally programs thrash rock bands (I think), and perhaps it was the late hour (they didn't start playing until probably 11:30pm - and played until just after 1am) -- but I really was able to connect with all that chaos last night.

Leave your aunt and uncle at home, would be my advice. Your wife is your call, but at least bring earplugs for her (and for yourself). I forgot to bring them, and my ears are still ringing (very slightly) this morning -- about 9 hours later.

But man - they were a hell of a group. :excited::excited::excited:

RT -

no problem with you quoting my PM.

I called my aunt to give her a heads up and they are still planning on attending the show. I really have my doubts that they will "enjoy" the show, but they are very open to new experiences and I am sure they will appreciate the experience. We will all be bringing earplugs, that is certain.

I am also glad this show starts at 8:00, because I sure don't feel like getting home at 2:00 on a worknight. (Damn, I sound old....)

I'll let you know how everyone reacts next Wednesday.

Everybody else -- get out there and see this group!!! It won't cost much, and they need people to play to.

You don't have to take all your family like John (way to go John!!), but if you have even half a ear for free-jazz, these guys are really top drawer.

Just got this in the e-mail...

Subject: SOUND ON SURVIVAL(free jazz trio from SF) returns to KC 5/21/04

FOR IMMMEDIATE RELEASE:

On Friday, May 21, the San Francisco-based free-jazz

trio known as Sound On Survival will return to Kansas

Balanca's on Grand St and were sufficiently smitten

with Kansas City to make a second stop here to cap off

their lengthy US tour!

The respective resumes of saxophonist Marco Eneidi,

bassist Lisle Ellis and percussionist Peter Valsamis

read like a who's-who of free-jazz and modern music

luminaries; either collectively or as a group they

have with performed with Cecil Taylor, Bill Dixon,

Dewey Redman, William Parker, The ROVA Saxophone

Quartet, Peter Brotzmann, and countless others.

Together, they create a unique mix of high-energy free

jazz and melodic, introspective sounds.

The performance at YJ's Snack Bar will begin at 8pm

and is free(donations for the road-weary musicians

will be cheerfully accepted!).

SOUND ON SURVIVAL

Friday, May 21st

YJ's Snack Bar, 128 W. 18th St, KCMO

So, has anybody else seen this group on their current tour??

John B.: I know you saw them in VT. Could you give a report to us about what you thought?? (And maybe what your wife, aunt, and uncle though too? ^_^ )

John B.:  I know you saw them in VT.  Could you give a report to us about what you thought??  (And maybe what your wife, aunt, and uncle though too?  ^_^ )

The show was great! It started off slowly, as the band had just driven down from Montreal and didn't seem to know how long they were expected to play for, how many sets, etc... The show started late and the band took a few tunes to warm up. The crowd was very sparse, which also seemed to throw the band a bit. By the third tune, "Shock and Aw-shucks," they seemed to be up to speed and really started cooking. The audience really started getting into the music and having a great time. The band was nowhere near as loud as I was expecting them to be, based on your comments, which was probably a good thing, as the room they were playing in is extremely small.

We all had a blast at the show, my aunt and uncle included. They have already asked me to let them know as soon as another show is booked at this venue, as they really enjoyed temselves. I don't think they would ever pull out a Sound on Survival disc and play it at home, but they would most definitely go see them live again.

The band were great people to talk with. We all stood outside and talked with them about their music, the tour and the VT jazz scene before heading back home.

I almost forgot to mention: I told them that I knew someone who had seen them in KC who had loved the show. They tried to figure out who that could be so I mentioned "Andrew Hill fan," at which point they all said "Oh, Tom!"

(I could probably do a better job reviewing the show but I've been under the weather and too busy at work to focus on getting my thoughts together. Basically, if you have any interest in free-ish jazz you really should check this band out.)

From Joe's/Spontoon's weekly jazz column in tomorrow's KC Star...

• The San Francisco-based free-jazz group Sound on Survival makes a return appearance at 10 tonight (Friday, May 21st) at the Hobbs Building, 1427 W. Ninth St. in the West Bottoms, after the opening of David Ford's new art exhibit. The group features saxophonist Marco Eneidi, bassist Lisle Ellis and percussionist Peter Valsamis.

"Oh, Tom!" is gonna try like heck to be there. B)

EDIT: Note, this is a different venue (and time) than was in the original announcement (up above).

I know Joe can't make it. Eric?? Paul??
