ghost of miles Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 This one's sounding very good so far as it nears the end of its first spin. With Ben Allison on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. I've enjoyed Kimbrough's work ever since the Herbie Nichols Project CDs started coming out. Quote
chuckyd4 Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 I just got this one in the mail today from Palmetto.... I'll report back when I get a chance to give it a spin. Quote
Pete C Posted April 24, 2004 Report Posted April 24, 2004 Frank is great. I had the pleasure of seeing him do a solo gig at a little place in my neighborhood in Brooklyn this past winter. It was a really memorable concert. Quote

ghost of miles Posted May 6, 2004 Author Report Posted May 6, 2004 The new Kimbrough keeps growing on me--I played a fair chunk of it on the radio last night. Quirky, catchy original compositions, which I'm always happy to find coming from the pen of a modern player. Quote
sal Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Palmetto is really a great label. The stuff they've been putting out in recent memory is really exceptional. I look forward to getting this one, as well as the new Fred Hersch disc. Quote
alankin Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 (edited) Yes, some very nice compositions on the new Kimbrough... Edited May 7, 2004 by alankin Quote

sal Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Welcome Frank! I was spinning Ted Nash's "Still Evolved" last night. Great playing on that record! I look forward to picking up your new one soon. Quote
ghost of miles Posted September 22, 2004 Author Report Posted September 22, 2004 (edited) I'll have some interview comments from Frank on the edition of "Just You and Me" that I'm guest-hosting today (3:30-5 p.m.), talking about both LULLABLUEBYE and the new Maria Schneider record as well--and music from those CDs too, of course, in addition to tracks from the recent Ted Nash and Ben Allison CD. He'll also be on Night Lights this week, talking about the Herbie Nichols Project. WFIU Edited September 22, 2004 by ghost of miles Quote
Dr. Rat Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 (edited) Just added Frank's record (finally!). It's good, I can say that much, but someone else did the review, which wasn't very detailed: "Add it." Any help from the group? I'd like to add details but I'm too damn busy to spend a couple of hours listening closely at the moment. Ben Allison's new one is a bit more subdued than his last few Medicine Wheel projects, I'd say, but he's still mining some interesting territory bewteen the reflectivenes sof a lot of Jazz Composers stuff and the more strongly rhythmic stuff he seems to have an affinity for. I think of it as being in the best 21st-century chamber jazz tradition. --eric Edited September 22, 2004 by Dr. Rat Quote
Joe M Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 Gee Dr. Rat, I guess a late add is better than no add, but why'd it take so long? The record has been out at radio for months! Quote
sal Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 I finally got around to spinning this one last night after purchasing it about a week ago. VERY nice! I don't know how people say that jazz is dead when there are records like this being made. Here are three completely original musicians with near perfect chemistry making some brand new music, readily contributing to the art form in the highest way. By the way, has anyone else noticed that its been a really good year for piano trio recordings? Quote
fkimbrough Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 Hey Sal - many thanks for your kind words about Lullabluebye - hope you'll continue to enjoy it..........Best, FK Quote
