neveronfriday Posted May 7, 2004 Author Report Posted May 7, 2004 Shouldn't you change that signature to "jazz quote of the year"? I'll change it. Check me out in a minute or two. Quote
neveronfriday Posted May 7, 2004 Author Report Posted May 7, 2004 Maybe I should've gone for this one: Chet Baker: "Well, if I could play like Wynton (Marsalis), I wouldn’t play like Wynton.” Quote
couw Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 isn't this set still available at a decent price (i.e. <50EUR) ? Quote

Leeway Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Here's a link for you. Great set BTW. Hollywood Sessions Quote
neveronfriday Posted May 7, 2004 Author Report Posted May 7, 2004 I wouldn't mind having a cheaper used copy. Cheers! Quote
couw Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 (edited) erm... the ZYX is the same as the US version BTW, just repackaged. and the package still is the same, only with a different sticker on the *bottom* of the box. Edited May 7, 2004 by couw Quote
Claude Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 It was available for years from Zweitausendeins, for 70 DM/35 Euro. Maybe some local 2001 stores still have it. I bought it early this year in Munich. Quote
Brad Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 There's this ebay auction for $62 (without shipping). I don't know if that's the price you're looking for. Quote
neveronfriday Posted May 8, 2004 Author Report Posted May 8, 2004 Since I started looking for this set, I've stumbled across a (German) review by someone I have relied on again and again with good results, and he wrote that on four of the discs, the sound is rather poor. In the review he writes, that the drums often sound like someone was drumming on "phone books". Flat. Dead. Can someone verify that? Quote
B. Goren. Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 From time to time the "Djangos" have a used copy of this set. You can add it to your *notify me* list. Take a look here. Quote

In the review he writes, that the drums often sound like someone was drumming on "phone books". Flat. Dead. Can someone verify that? The drum sound is rather flabby in spots. My guess this is due to the soft tuning used by drummer Carl Burnett. Quote
Brad Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 This wasn't my experience with this set. I really found it very good, at least on my system. No complaints here from the sound. Quote
Claude Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 (edited) The sound is good (let's say 7/10), except that the entire CD1 is mono! The second session of the set that starts on CD1 and continues on CD2 is mono on he first CD and stereo on the second. So this must be a mastering or manufactoring error. No problem with the other CDs. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=7551 Edited May 8, 2004 by Claude Quote
Leeway Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 I think the set sounds first-rate. I'm surprised to hear criticism of it in that regard. This is a must-have for any Art Pepper fan. Quote
JohnS Posted May 10, 2004 Report Posted May 10, 2004 There is nothing wrong with the recorded sound, it's first rate. The problem is the drum tuning. There is no "snap" to the snare on some tracks and I don't find that attractive. Quote
