  1. As our resident film music expert, any thoughts on Franz Waxman? I ask because I just picked the "Sunset Boulevard" collection of his work (conducted by Charles Gerhardt) and found much of it very impressive, especially in the scores that call for symphonic forces. His command of those resources seems remarkable to me and fairly distinctive as well.

  2. BTW, I like that remark to Gene Lees: "You should try to be a women for while." Even better, given my view of Mr. Lees: "You should try to be a human being for a while."

  3. Do me a favor, and I'll shut up about the book for all time. Ask Stephenson why he said that only a "dozen or so" of the 589 people (a nice specific number) who visited Smith's loft and could be identified went to college. As I've demonstrated, after taking just a little time and trouble to check, that "dozen or so" figure is way off the mark ... and probably even more off the mark than I could determine because I couldn't track down the educational backgrounds of all those 589 people. In any case, I don't understand why an author would so carelessly state such an erroneous thing. Did Stephenson just take someone's word for it? Enlighten me, if you can.

  4. I placed those posts in a new thread on Miscellaneous Music called "Thoughts on the Chicago Scene."

I send some critics' names as soon as I gather their addresses. BTW, by the standards of much of what I listen to, especially much of what's played around Chicago, what I've heard of Plunge, though excellent, isn't that weird. For example, check out my friends who comprise ...

  10. Thanks. I think that was the band's best performance of the tour.
