  1. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

Hello! I recently discovered these forums and I'm excited to find more recommendations for great jazz albums to check out. I've browsed the forums already and read about a lot of great stuff. I've been working on a list of the greatest jazz albums of all time on Ranker. If you're not familiar with that site, it has lists of items which you can give a thumbs up or thumbs down, and it updates the list in real-time as you vote on the list. For example, if you give an album a thumbs up, it might bump up its ranking on the list. If you give it a thumbs down, it might bump it down. Feel free to check out the list below and vote on any albums you like/dislike. Also, you can add albums that aren't already on the list. Any suggestions for albums that are missing? http://www.ranker.com/list/the-greatest-jazz-albums-of-all-time/joshua-kennedy

Haha, good point. By "collective public" in this case, I was referring to jazz fans. I would assume people who aren't into jazz aren't spending any time voting on this list. I'll check out some of the albums from that blog. Thanks!

Wouldn't you rather know what the collective public thinks of albums than read one person's opinion?
  4. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

I have been continuing to work through this list, taking recommendations, and trying to make it more diverse and less "BlueNotecentric." Thanks to all who gave input. I added quite a few albums from the suggestions in this thread. What albums am I still missing? http://www.ranker.com/list/the-greatest-jazz-albums-of-all-time/joshua-kennedy
  5. Aretha Franklin, RIP

    Awesome.
  6. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

Sure. I've tried to listen to most of the albums on the list, and found quite a few that I enjoyed and some that I purchased. A) I don't know of any way to even discover every jazz album ever made, nor do I have time to create that list. Help yourself if you want to do that. B) The albums that you see listed twice are a glitch that happens occasionally while adding votes. It's very annoying. As far as I know, no albums are actually on there twice. There are 5 Max Roach albums on the list. 1 Ayler and 1 Shepp.

    You got it!
  8. Dexter Gordon - Tokyo 1975

LOL. No. Thanking the topic starter for bringing this album to my attention. I'm a huge Dexter Gordon fan and didn't realize this was new stuff.
  9. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

Well, unless a bunch of people vote for it (which seems unlikely), it will remain in relative obscurity toward the bottom of the list. I'm not familiar with him. Any particular albums you'd recommend? Glad you enjoyed the list.
  10. Dexter Gordon - Tokyo 1975

I just listened to the whole album on Spotify and enjoyed it quite a bit. Thanks for sharing!
  11. Dexter Gordon - Tokyo 1975

I'm not sure if you use Spotify, but they have the whole album on there.
  12. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

    Sure. Why not?
  13. Dexter Gordon - Tokyo 1975

I didn't realize this was newly discovered material. I'll have to check it out.
  14. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

Added that one to the list.
  15. Shirley Scott

If I spend $5 and don't like it, that's $5 lost that could have gone toward a record I already know I want. I've got hundreds (thousands, maybe even) of albums on my wish list already.
  16. Shirley Scott

Yeah, can't find it anywhere on YouTube or Spotify. Maybe I'll just ask them to throw it on at the record store next time I'm there. Sounds like it'll be worth it.
  17. Shirley Scott

The first thing that's keeping the record on the shelf is that I've never heard it. I rarely buy records I haven't heard. I've been burned one too many times doing that. The second factor is that the date scares me. I have heard very few jazz albums from the 70s that I enjoyed enough to purchase them.
  18. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

The albums are in order based on user votes. So until people vote for Jimmy Smith, Charlie Parker, etc., they will be lower on the list. There should be a search option on there to search for certain artists if you don't want to scroll through the whole list. And I did make this list.
  19. Shirley Scott

I just know that a lot of artists that I liked in the 50s-60s (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, etc.) completely changed styles in the 70s. Everybody got into the fusion stuff. For the most part, I was not a fan of it at all.
  20. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

They are not in the top 100. They are further down. There are more than 600 albums on the list.
  21. Shirley Scott

Is it anything like his other albums (Forrest Fire, Out of the Forrest, etc.)? Or is it more 70s-sounding? I am not a fan of most 70s jazz.
  22. Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time - Ranker

There are 3 Jimmy Smith albums on there (Midnight Special, Back at the Chicken Shack, Dynamic Duo w/ Wes Montgomery). Also a couple Charlie Parker Verve albums (S/T and Complete Verve Recordings). You gotta dig through the whole list.
  23. Coltrane: Both Directions At Once (lost album)

I agree. Ballads is amazing. Just a beautiful album.
  24. Shirley Scott

Do you know of anywhere I can listen to this online? I saw it at a record store the other day for $5 and almost picked it up, but I haven't heard any of it. I couldn't find anything on Spotify or YouTube. This album is dope.
