  1. Need a new amp

One day I'll avail myself of the 30 day return policy, try them it out, and sell the PrimaLuna if I like the Decware. For right now, I needed a sure bet. I'm studying for a big exam that happens in five weeks, so unfortunately I really don't have a lot of time to commit to searching and product trials at this point. And I my girlfriend and I were both totally blown away by the PrimaLuna today, so as long as wattage matching with the speakers in a non-issue, we at least have something that I know we will really enjoy and that completely blows away the Rotel we were using before.

Thanks a lot- this is encouraging to hear. I was getting a little depressed there! I demoed the ProLogue 2 with DeVore Gibbon 8s. Never heard of them before, but they are a very nice speaker. You can see them here: http://www.inlivingstereo.com/loudspeakers.html They are only a little smaller than my 704s, but according to the shop's website, they are particularly well suited to low power amps.
  3. Need a new amp

So I went with the ProLogue 2 because I loved the sound and it was available just a few blocks away. It will arrive in about a week. I have one concern now: the ProLogue is only 40W. I just realized my B&W 704s are rated for 50W to 150W. Is this going to be a problem?
  4. Need a new amp

OK, just got back from In Living Stereo and was unexpectedly blown away by some tube gear. I would be perfectly happy with one of these two: http://www.primaluna-usa.com/index.php?opt...8&Itemid=53 http://www.primaluna-usa.com/index.php?opt...1&Itemid=60 Any idea how these compare with Decware? BTW, I did an A/B of these with a Rega solid state and it just wasn't even close. The PrimaLuna units were in a completely different league in terms of clarity, separation and liveliness.

DecWare does seem to offer incredible value. Really wish I could hear one before forking over the cash, though. I know you are a long time devotee and I trust your advice on audio, but everyone perceives these things so differently.
  6. Need a new amp

My concerns with tube amps are mainly maintenance and clarity. If there is tube amp that does not have issues in these areas, I'd be willing to check them out. But I really don't want to get in a situation where I'm psyching myself out about whether tubes need to be replaced, where to find them, does it really sound as good with the new tubes, etc. Honestly that is probably the main reason I prefer solid state. Thanks for all the help.

Any thoughts on the Musical Fidelity A1?
  8. Need a new amp

Any experience with any of the following, all recommended to me at Stereo Exchange? T+A (German brand with unfortunate name) Arcam A32 Ayre AX-7e Thanks. Also, is it even possible to get a decent pre/power amp combo in this range?

Thanks, Porcy. In Living Stereo is right up the block from me and has this model on their website. Any idea as to pricing?
  10. About an hour ago I was walking on Mercer between Washington Place and Waverly towards Oren's Daily Roast (damn good coffee shop), when I hear a sreaming voice above my head. I look up, see a naked person falling through the air, and stop dead in my tracks as it lands head first, bounces off the pavement with a sickly thud and come to rest with its ass facing me. He (or she, I didn't step around to find out) landed about five to ten feet in front of me. I came back to my dept. to tell my coworkers what happened. They asked if the person was dead. I said if the fall hadn't killed him, I would have. I notified the police immediately, of course. To my surprise, they had almost no questions whatsoever. The body was collected within five minutes.
  11. Sorry to dig up a morbid thread, but I just stumbled across this one accidently while doing a little googling. I was struck by how much our perceptions of a situation can be altered by extreme circumstances. I very literally nearly died that day; if I had been walking a little faster I almost certainly would have. Looking back five years later, my attitude towards Joanne (the jumper) is very different. But I can't blame myself for how I felt at the time.
  12. This is quite unnerving; I'm very surprised that I hadn't heard anything about it until this morning: http://money.cnn.com/2007/03/29/news/honey...dex.htm?cnn=yes More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_Collapse_Disorder This has wide-ranging ramifications beyond just honey production. Besides the fact that honeybees are really cool animals, we need them.
  13. The all "Hello Kitty" thread...

Unless it was in one of the now-broken images above, looks like no one posted the Hello Kitty crop circle: https://webspace.utexas.edu/cokerwr/www/sli.../hellokitty.jpg
  14. Shaving

AOS makes lots of good stuff. I like the shaving oil as much as the hard soap. Also, the silvertip badger brush I have from them is the best I've ever had. Looks like it is time to stock up on the oil and soap. JL. let me invite you to join us at ShaveMy Face! I'm sure that the guys will be interested in your opinions. Or maybe not, depending on what they are! http://www.shavemyface.com/forum/ Sure, I'll give it a try. BTW, the AOS hard soap looks exactly like that at Taylor of Old Bond Street - it is even the same teak container. I generally don't like TOBS much, but I've never actually tried their hard soap so I can't say if it does actually seem to be an identical product.

  16. Your Top 3 Mosaics...

There's a Columbia Mosaic box on Mosaic??? I was referring to the Candid one. What's the story with the Columbia set? I had no idea it existed.
  17. Your Top 3 Mosaics...

Anthony Braxton Andrew Hill Chico Hamilton (still haven't found anyone to sell me a copy of this...) Honorable mention: Cecil Taylor I have some reservations about including the Hill and Taylor just because all of the music has since been made available in other formats, but on the musical merits alone they make the cut for me. By that standard, I guess the Mingus set has to be included as well.
  18. Joe Satriani sues Coldplay

It's about time somebody sued Coldplay for something.
  19. RIP my NAD 542 CD Player

After about 3.5 years of heavy use (if memory serves), my NAD has crapped out on me. For the last week it has been freezing up in the middle of tracks with increasing frequency. I love the sound of the NAD, but given that I've read and heard a lot of complaints about longevity and quality control on their CD players, I'm inclined to switch. My budget is $1,000 (-ish). Obvious candidates are the Rotel 1072 and the Rega Apollo, which I plan to audition on Saturday. Are there any others I should check out? I'm intrigued by the idea of getting a very basic CD transport and pairing it with a very good DAC like the Benchmark DAC1, but don't know the ins-and-outs of such setups, so any advice on that would be greatly appreciated as well. I could double the budget for that type of setup, since I have other uses for the DAC. Thanks!
  20. RIP my NAD 542 CD Player

I thought about that, but I'm so busy with work I really don't have time to deal with it. I was thinking of giving the NAD to a friend for xmas and letting him try to get it fixed. Also, getting it fixed means not having a cdp for an indefinite period of time, which I'm not into.
  21. RIP my NAD 542 CD Player

Thanks. It occurred to me that I have a cheap Sony DVD player that is not in use (replaced by Blu Ray). It has an optical digital output. If I paired that up with a good external DAC, there's no reason it wouldn't sound great, right?
  22. Blue Note Catalog deletions

Just noticed that the Conns are real cheap on Amazon right now.
  23. I'm looking for a universal remote for my Sony TV, Sony DVD, NAD CD player, Rotel integrated amp, and Sci. Atlanta DVR. I know absolutely nothing about universal remotes. Any recommendations? Thanks.
  24. I've got the itch to get back to Paris. I'm not too adverse to cold weather, but I am put off by sloppy weather. I also like traveling during the off-season. All that said, is January a bad time to go? Should I just wait for April? My main interests are walking around, seeing museums, taking pictures and, most of all, eating awesome French food. Thanks...
  25. Paris in January?

Thanks! Time to check on flight and Hotel deals!
