  1. Wow, I am excited about this...FINALLY bought my copy of Intents and Purposes and it is absolutely stunning. Can't wait for this one!
  2. Glad to hear that the CD sounds good. I picked up the vinyl reissue a while back and was very pleasantly surprised-- it sounds fabulous. For less than $10 too! There may be some quality control issues...my first copy was warped. But the sound and pressing quality are really quite good.
  3. Great news!! And I'm going to keep hoping for Mtume's "Alkebu-lan"...
  4. Hmmm...maybe so...couldn't we say 4 bars with a 1st & 2nd ending?
  5. Don't know that one, will have to check it out... Like lots of blues, it's a four-bar riff repeated three times, but with different chords for each repetition, so I think you'd have to call it twelve bars. Exactly...I'm talking four bars TOTAL.
  6. Yeah, you're right about that...I'll have to refresh my memory on some of those. I'm not sure whether any of them were that short or not, but could be...
  7. Ah, yes...Friday the 13th! I knew there had to be another Monk one. Here's Light Blue: My chart says four bars, but I suppose you could argue that the first four bars have slightly different changes than the second four? I dunno...he plays it a little differently every time. I'm aware of that Abercrombie tune but can't recall how it goes, will have to check it out...6 bars is close enough.
  8. Happened to bring a couple of charts to a gig last night that were only four bars long. It got me thinking...how many tunes are there that are only four bars in length? I'm talking the WHOLE tune, not just a 4-bar A-section with a bridge. Could be an interesting theme night or something. So far I've only got: Light Blue (Thelonious Monk) Sundance (Chick Corea) Short Subject (Harold Land) I'm sure there are some obvious ones that I'm missing...any thoughts?
  9. Okay, I'm very late to the party and am an infrequent poster here but just stumbled upon this thread and am finding it really interesting. When I think about great music AND economic viability for a reissue the very first album that comes to mind is this: Mtume Umoja Ensemble - Alkebu-Lan: Land of the Blacks An amazing record with Stanley Cowell, Leroy Jenkins, Gary Bartz, Carlos Garnett, Buster Williams, Billy Hart, etc... This is one of the most sought-after Strata East records. I would think it's pretty much guaranteed that the Strata East fans would jump all over this. Oh yeah, and the music KILLS.
  10. Excllent news...that's a fantastic record.
  11. Oh my gosh...I had no idea he was ill either. This is tough news to hear. He's one of my favorite musicians.
  12. Yep, as danasgoodstuff said above, both of them are on a couple of those UK-issued comps...Blue Funk, Lonesome & Blue, Blue Juice, etc... The listing from the jazzdisco.org site must have been done before those comps came out. But the two in red are still unissued as far as I know. No apology necessary, I hope my responses didn't come off as rude or anything...was just trying to clarify.
  13. Both of those (Blow Up and this one) are amazing. Anyone heard Land's "Choma (Burn)", also with Hutcherson? That's probably one of my all-time favorites.
  14. Actually, no, it's a different take, different year, different band. Yes, but not the two tracks I highlighted in red...those two (including "Procession") have never been released. Actually I'm particularly interested in "Photon..." which is a Cowell tune that showed up on some of his own records. I'm not a Hutcherson completist, but I am definitely a Hutcherson/Land completist. I wondered about this. I'm sure this is all very wishful thinking on my part that any of these would see the light of day...but as mentioned in the previous post I'm a pretty diehard fan of the Hutcherson/Land groups in particular and am always hungry for more. And while they're at it they could throw in the stuff with Cochran.
  15. I don't know...would love to hear it and find out though!
  16. Well, maybe not so...I only said that because I've seen those sessions mentioned in a few places 'roundabout the web.
  17. Just decided to start another discussion on all the remaining unissued Hutcherson material here:
  18. I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I wanted to start this thread because of the "Head On" thread in the Re-issues forum: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/46544-bobby-hutcherson-head-on/. I'm a huge fan of the various Hutcherson/Land groups from the late 60s into the 70s. I took another peek at the Blue Note discography at jazzdisco.org, to jog my memory about unreleased/missing material that I thought I remembered seeing there a while back. A significant amount of "new" old music did find its way onto that Head On reissue, which was a dream come true for me, but I'm still wondering about what's left in the vaults...There are a couple of rejected tracks from "Spiral", for one. There's a second rejected take of "Mtume" from Head On. There were also a number of tracks recorded in December 1971 with a larger group...many of these have now appeared on comps, but there are still two that remain unissued. Then finally there's the infamous May 1972 material with Todd Cochran, James Leary and Michael Carvin. Here's the full info from jazzdisco.org...I've put the unreleased/rejected material in red: Couldn't all this material be re-issued on a single disc? Does anyone from Blue Note or Mosaic read this forum?
  19. What did you think of Now!? That's one of my favorite Hutcherson records. Eugene McDaniels, who led the vocalists on that one, lives in my town...he's a great guy and is still singing and writing music. I was, and am still, blown away by the Head On reissue. The bonus tracks make it for me...I thought it was just "okay" on the original LP release. Some great moments definitely, but not Bobby's best record. But with the bonus tracks it's a whole new ballgame. Not only are the bonus tracks better than much of what's on the original album, I think they actually make the original album sound better by association! I think there is some more unreleased Hutcherson material from around this period and I hope it eventually sees the light of day. Webcity, I've listened to Now! twice over the last week, and at first, I thought the vocals were off-putting, but strangely I couldn't stop playing the cd either. The second time though, I started to really appreciate McDaniels' vocals and how much he contributes to the music overall. So yeah, I wasn't prepared for something like this, considering that I was used to records like Total Eclipse but this disc is certainly growing on me. An interesting Hutch record to say the least! Glad you like it! Yeah, it's right up there for me...probably my 2nd favorite Hutcherson record, closely following the Medina/Spiral CD that was available for a short time around 10 years ago. I think I was pretty surprised by Now at first too. Now I just think it's brilliant though. I could listen to "Slow Change" all day! Eugene's voice from that period is an acquired taste for sure, I've seen some comments online from people who aren't crazy about it. I love the "yodeling" though!!

Thanks for posting those...I was aware of a couple of those Blue Note comps, have been trying to track them down. Actually, I have Blue Juice Vol. 2 on order from Amazon UK, but they are waiting to get it back in. That has "Brother Rap" from Bobby, and the other tracks on it sound pretty great too. I wish Blue Note would release that whole session from 5-24-72, but I suppose it's unlikely at this point.
  21. Got a few things up on ebay right now, with hopefully more to come over the next few days and weeks: http://myworld.ebay.com/webbsmusic Thanks for looking!
  22. Don't want to hijack, but...NO WAY! I had no idea Eugene McDaniels was still alive/active. Outlaw and Headless Heroes are two of my favorite records. Is he still performing regularly? May I ask what "your town" is? Kittery, Maine, believe it or not. He has been writing some music with a friend of mine, a great pianist named Tom Snow who lives near Portland, Maine. Not performing too much, as far as I know, but he did sit in on one of Tom's gigs recently and sounded amazing as always. Here's his new website: http://www.eugenemcdaniels.com/ Yeah, Headless Heroes is brilliant! One of my top 5 albums, ever. That is terrific news. We'll be up there in July and I'll keep an eye out. Paging Alan Lowe! Haha...yeah! Is Alan on here? I was in email communication with him a while back but then his email address stopped working. Do you come up to the Portsmouth, NH area? There is a great place called the Press Room that has jazz regularly. Maybe you already know about it. Boy, now we're really off topic, sorry everyone... :blush2:

  24. I'm not a regular here, so apologies if this has been discussed before, but I discovered this podcast a few days ago and it is just amazing. Well, for me anyway, because these guys seem to have my taste in music. Andrew Hill, Pharoah Sanders, Stanley Cowell, The Tribe, Bobby Hutcherson, Doug Carn, Horace Tapscott, Ensemble El-Salaam...you get the picture. Here is the latest one: http://www.soulandjazz.com/category/aquarium/31st-december-2010/
