  1. Wow...thanks for that link. Really fascinating. I've just read most of it, but plan to go back and check out all the sound samples.
  2. What did you think of Now!? That's one of my favorite Hutcherson records. Eugene McDaniels, who led the vocalists on that one, lives in my town...he's a great guy and is still singing and writing music. I was, and am still, blown away by the Head On reissue. The bonus tracks make it for me...I thought it was just "okay" on the original LP release. Some great moments definitely, but not Bobby's best record. But with the bonus tracks it's a whole new ballgame. Not only are the bonus tracks better than much of what's on the original album, I think they actually make the original album sound better by association! I think there is some more unreleased Hutcherson material from around this period and I hope it eventually sees the light of day.
  3. Just stumbled upon this thread...some GREAT playlists here. Looking forward to checking out your show Bill!

  6. Dear Miles is a good one. I've also got Etudes and Third Plane (with Herbie & Tony) and those are pretty amazing. Used to have Uptown Conversation and Spanish Blue on LP, but no longer. I remember them both being good though. There are definitely some sketchy ones from the 70s that are a little too disco-ish (avoid "Anything Goes" like the plague!) ... Sorry to get off-topic...
  7. Wow...love the samples! Thanks for posting this. I'm a fan of his dad's bass playing too...is he still with us?
  8. Definitely the most interesting looking one of this batch! Would be nice if they did some others that haven't been out on CD in the US...it looks like most of the rest of them have.
  9. I'm excited for the Vol. 2 disc on Pi...have always been a Threadgill fan but to be honest I stopped with his new recordings somewhere in the 90s. Not sure why. I picked up "Vol. 1" recently and was blown away.
  10. Thank you Fred. Rest in peace.
  11. I'm a little late to the party here, but count me in as someone who would love to see boxes from David Murray, Mal Waldron, Max Roach, Muhal Richard Abrams... Excited to see the Lester Bowie & Cecil Taylor boxes coming...!
  12. I've been curious about this one, may have to give it a try. I absolutely LOVE the stuff he did with Hutcherson (and esp. the Hutcherson/Land group) in the late 60s.
  13. Got another question here about the Ranelin/Harrison record "A Message from the Tribe"...does anyone here have the current LP reissue of this? I have been assuming that it sounds the same as the CD version(s) but maybe I'm wrong about that. Anybody have this?
  14. Great! Thanks for that...didn't even think that would be anywhere online.
  15. Thanks! Hmmm...I may just get the CD, it's certainly easier to find & probably cheaper than the vinyl at this point. Thanks for checking that, I really appreciate it.
  16. There was some sort of server/database problem a few years ago that resulted everyone's post count being lessened. Your smaller tally is likely related to that. Gotcha. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!
  17. I've been a member here since 2004, and I haven't posted a whole lot, but definitely a lot more than 26 times. I've had long periods of inactivity though...does a person's post count reset to zero or something if they are not active for a while? Just curious.
  18. There's also a Japanese mini-LP version of this on CD...I suppose that would probably have the lead sheet if in fact it's an accurate replica. It's amazing how much confusion there is on the web between these two albums...I keep finding the cover for one combined with the track listing for the other Impact, plus links that lead to the wrong album, etc... Had Mr. Tolliver known about the internet in the 70s he probably would have come up with a different title for one of them.
  19. Hi, just a quick question for anyone who might have this CD... First off, there are actually two totally different Tolliver albums called "Impact"...one on Strata-East with a big band, and another on Enja with a quartet, which is the one I'm concerned with (pictured here: http://www.enjarecords.com/cd.php?nr=ENJ-2109 ). My question is: the original LP of this record contained lead sheets for one or more of the tunes (I know this not because I have it, but because I saw one on ebay)...does the CD reissue have the lead sheet(s) too? I know they would be tiny, but it's been done before (see: Steve Swallow - The Real Book). Thanks in advance for any help with this!
  20. Just a quick tip for those seeking out the Black Jazz CDs...I see that some of them are now fetching Big $$$ since they are no longer available from the Black Jazz site, but most if not all are available new through HMV Japan and if you buy a bunch of them it's worth the shipping. In fact, I just bought The Awakening's "Hear, Sense, and Feel" and they had it on special for 1000 yen (about 11 bucks + shipping). Most of the others are more like $22 + shipping. But Doug Carn's "Revelation" is $53 on Amazon vs. the ~$22 I paid for it.
  21. Oh man...awesome! Thanks for sharing the info. That's so funny, I don't know any Dee Dee Bridgewater at all but for some reason she popped up on my radar screen last week and I thought to myself I gotta check her out... Now I definitely do. It's actually not the echo-y distant sound that bothers me at all...I can hear that and I dig it. What they did to the CDs was apply way too much noise reduction-- and I mean A LOT...I can't always detect NR but in this case they absolutely butchered it. It sounds like some guy got his new wav editor program and set the noise reducer to KILL. It not only took out every last bit of hiss, it took a good chunk of music with it. The cymbals sound like MP3 compression gone horribly wrong if you know what I mean. I don't know if I'm supposed to say this here, but I would love to get even a burnt CD of the LP if someone were willing to do that. This album is so friggin good I just gotta hear it the way it's supposed to sound.
  22. The Japanese CD of this just arrived in my mailbox today & I'm looking forward to listening to it!
  23. Gotcha...I have a copy of that one so I don't have an LP to look at. I always assumed it was a very limited self-released pressing of some sort.
