Fred Lacey

Ira Gitler in his liner notes to Coltrane's 'Soultrane' album - where 'Theme for Ernie' was introduced - says Freddie Lacey was a Philadelphian. Maybe some Philadelphian on this board know something about him.

Was he the same Fred Lacey who played guitar with Lester Young in the forties?

Fred Lacey was indeed a Philadelphian. Bootsie Barnes knew him well - he was his teacher. Apparently, McCoy Tyner did an entire record of Lacey tunes that has yet to be released. Lacey also spent some time in the slammer - Jimmy Heath knew him there.

Lacey was a guitarist, so it is possible he is the one with Lester.

A mystery figure, for sure.

Bertrand.

Dug this up after hearing Theme for Erney.

It was Bootsie Barnes who told me about this Tyner record. I wish I had asked McCoy. I wonder now if it really existed. How can we find out? I will start with Facebook.
